First Grade Weekly News 9-23-13

Hope everyone had a great weekend!  Below are a few reminders and things to look for :)

Reading Street Family Practice sheet is sent home every Monday along with the homework.  It isn't part of the homework but I wanted to send it home in case you want your child to have extra practice over the phonemic concepts we are working on during the week.  For example, this week's sheet tells you the story we are reading and gives 5 different activities you can do during the week that go along with our sight words, -ing endings, and short e words (which is what we are working on and is on our spelling test and weekly test).  Again, it isn't part of the homework and doesn't have to be turned back in, but is something that could help your child.

Sight words- Right now, I am noticing that sight words are holding some of the kiddos back from moving on in reading levels and are what they are struggling with, so practice would be great.  That is why I have decided to send home a sight word packet that contains 200 words.  I went over some of these words already with your child at school.  If there are any words on the sheets that are highlighted, it would be great for them to practice.  If they missed more than 4 on a page I stopped at that page and didn't have them read further because I feel like 4 words to practice at a time is a good amount and we don't want to push more unless they are ready.  If your child didn't miss any words and read them all correctly I didn't send them home with a packet :).   I won't go over the list with them again until the middle of October.

These sight words go along with the Reading Street stories and books that we read, and each week we have 4-5 that are included in our weekly test.  Practicing them at home will help move them up in reading levels much more quickly.

Box Tops Contest- Is ending in about a week or two (first week of October) so please keep bringing them in!  Our class would love to win the contest and earn a pizza party or popcorn party.  Not to mention, whoever brings the most in our class will get a special ice cream treat from me to eat at lunch!
