First Grade Weekly News 9-23-13

Hope everyone had a great weekend!  Below are a few reminders and things to look for :)

Reading Street Family Practice sheet is sent home every Monday along with the homework.  It isn't part of the homework but I wanted to send it home in case you want your child to have extra practice over the phonemic concepts we are working on during the week.  For example, this week's sheet tells you the story we are reading and gives 5 different activities you can do during the week that go along with our sight words, -ing endings, and short e words (which is what we are working on and is on our spelling test and weekly test).  Again, it isn't part of the homework and doesn't have to be turned back in, but is something that could help your child.

Sight words- Right now, I am noticing that sight words are holding some of the kiddos back from moving on in reading levels and are what they are struggling with, so practice would be great.  That is why I have decided to send home a sight word packet that contains 200 words.  I went over some of these words already with your child at school.  If there are any words on the sheets that are highlighted, it would be great for them to practice.  If they missed more than 4 on a page I stopped at that page and didn't have them read further because I feel like 4 words to practice at a time is a good amount and we don't want to push more unless they are ready.  If your child didn't miss any words and read them all correctly I didn't send them home with a packet :).   I won't go over the list with them again until the middle of October.

These sight words go along with the Reading Street stories and books that we read, and each week we have 4-5 that are included in our weekly test.  Practicing them at home will help move them up in reading levels much more quickly.

Box Tops Contest- Is ending in about a week or two (first week of October) so please keep bringing them in!  Our class would love to win the contest and earn a pizza party or popcorn party.  Not to mention, whoever brings the most in our class will get a special ice cream treat from me to eat at lunch!

1st Grade Weekly News 9-16-13

Hope everyone had a great weekend...Go Chiefs!  lol

Updates for this week...

Kiwi bags- it is important that they are coming home everyday and then returning to school the next.  Sometimes the kids forget their bag, and I usually have them pay a pirate coin.  We have our packing up routine down pretty well, so I want to make sure they are being responsible by making sure it is in their backpack ready to go home everyday.

Purple Take Home Folders- Are getting kind of cluttered.  Remember that items in the front are important and are there for you to read and/or sign.  However, if it isn't something you need to sign and return then you can keep it, it doesn't have to stay in the front.

Also, please make sure you are helping your child empty their folder out.  This will also give you a chance to see their graded work (spelling tests, worksheets, etc.).

Box Top Contest- Will end at the beginning of October so keep bringing in those box tops!

Parent/Teacher conferences- Are in mid Oct. Those of you who made it to Parent Night already signed up for the time and day you want.  If you have no had a chance to sign up, I will email you individually to talk about the slots I have left so we can work something out.

That's all I have for this week.  If you have any questions please feel free to email or call me.

1st Grade Weekly News 9-9-13

Not much going on this week...but a few reminders are below :)

Homework- We had 19/20 kiddos turn in homework on Friday, but a few were not complete.  Please make sure you are setting time aside each night for your child to complete some part of their homework.  You don't have to do the days in order, and if your child can get it all done in one night that's great, but please make sure it is getting complete AND YOU ARE INCLUDING YOUR PARENT INITIALS at the bottom of the front page.

Spelling- We have taken our first 2 tests.  I am done grading them, so will be sending them home this week so you can take a peek at how your child did.  At parent night I explained the grading system- we take the pre-test on Monday, and if your child gets all of them correct then, they don't have to take the post-test again on Friday.  Each word is worth 2 points.  1 point for the phonics skill, and 1 point for the spelling of the rest of the word.  For example if the word is back and they spell it correctly it's worth 2 points.  If they spell it "beck" they only get one point because they missed the short a sound.  If they spell it "bec" they get zero points because they missed the short a and ck ending spelling.  Hope that helps.  Remember, spelling tests will not be going home until post-tests are taken and scored.  There will be no spelling for homework because we want the kids to learn how to phonemically spell the word, instead of memorizing it.

Kiwi bag- Please continue to make sure these are being brought home and then also coming back to school each day.  The books in their bags go along with their weekly reading, and I also put different things in there they can do to go along with their homework.

Bathroom Breaks- First grade as a whole is having some issues with the kids taking independent bathroom breaks.  Our class has practiced and gone over procedures and rules for how to walk down the hallway and use the bathroom.  However, some kids are misusing their independent bathroom privileges.  Please help me to keep reminding them to use the bathroom when we take breaks as a whole class so that they don't miss important learning time and to treat the bathroom as a place to "go in, do your business, and come out."  :)

Box Tops Contest- Has begun!  If our class brings in the most we could earn either a ice cream or popcorn party!  So bring in those Box Tops!  Also, as an extra incentive, I told the kids that whoever brings in the most for our class will get to enjoy a small ice cream treat from me!

That is all I have!  If you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to contact me.  Have a great week!

Weekly News 9-3-13

We had a great first two weeks of school!  I am so excited to have the group I do this year!

Thank you to all of the parents that came to our 1st grade Parent Meeting last Wednesday!  If you were unable to make it, I sent home a few papers in your child's purple Take Home Folder so please make sure you have checked it.  Below are some things going on this week...

Monday, Sept. 2nd- NO SCHOOL

This week:
  • We will be officially starting reading groups on Wednesday.  On Monday and Tuesday we will be practicing our rotations and routines, but will officially start reading at the table on Wednesday.
  • I will be sending home a Digital Survey questionnaire so please make sure you look for that in your child's folder.   It will tell me who wants to receive emails or paper copies.
  • Kiwi bags will start coming home this week.  Please make sure you are checking it every night and that your child is bringing it to school everyday.
  • Weekly Homework will start coming home this week also.  If you ever lose a copy or want a head start I will always post it onto our website a week before.
I have posted a copy of our Sept. lunch menu.  Please make sure you are going over this with your child so they have an idea of what they will chose that day.

That is all that I've got...enjoy your short week!
